Kigali, Rwanda – April 2025
Moses Turahirwa, celebrated founder of the high-end Rwandan fashion brand Moshions, has once again found himself in legal trouble. The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) confirmed his arrest this week, citing the use of illicit drugs as the primary cause.
This development comes just months after Turahirwa’s name made headlines in 2023 over a separate drug-related arrest and forgery charges tied to a manipulated passport image. Though he was later released on bail, many expected the designer to steer clear of controversy following that case.
However, Turahirwa is now facing fresh public scrutiny after a series of social media posts made during Kwibuka Week—a sacred national period of mourning for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The posts, which circulated widely online, were criticized by many Rwandans as insensitive and bordering on genocide denial—a serious offense in the country.
While RIB has yet to publicly confirm whether Turahirwa will face charges related to the Kwibuka Week posts, a spokesperson emphasized that “ongoing investigations may reveal additional offenses.” The agency has urged the public to remain calm as due process takes place.
Turahirwa, who rose to prominence as a pioneer of Afro-futuristic fashion and a proud advocate of Rwandan heritage, has long been celebrated as a symbol of youth innovation and national pride. His arrest is a shocking fall from grace for many who admired his work and his resilience in pushing African fashion to global runways.
If found guilty, Turahirwa could face serious legal consequences, especially given his previous charges. As of now, he remains in custody as investigations continue.
